Robert Shiller on MiniMax Group

A feedback loop this textbook, running mostly through coverage the English-language record barely priced until the peak.

Shiller’s claim doesn’t require fraud or even a bad-faith actor — just a price that starts moving on a thin float, recruits buyers who weren’t there for the fundamentals, and generates its own justifying story as it goes (Irrational Exuberance). MiniMax’s debut and its unwind both fit that pattern closely enough to read like a demonstration case.

The run: a 109% first-day pop on roughly 5% of the company trading, a retail tranche oversubscribed more than a thousandfold, and a climb to more than seven times the offer price months later — on a float too thin for ordinary demand not to move the price, then ordinary demand meeting retail enthusiasm without a valuation anchor holding it down. The unwind supplies the model’s other half. A lock-up expiry in July 2026 released roughly half the company’s shares, and the stock fell 18% that day and 12% the next — a supply shock that broke whatever anchor the run-up had built. The same week, MiniMax raised roughly $2B in new financing (texxr.com/1172371) and its founder circulated a memo pledging to forgo his own salary until the company reaches AGI (texxr.com/1172392) — read through Shiller’s chapter on psychological anchors, a new anchor deployed at the precise moment the old one broke.

What complicates a clean application: Shiller built this framework on Yale investor surveys and English-language media tracking, instruments that don’t reach a Hong Kong-listed, Shanghai-based company’s retail base directly. TEXXR’s own coverage volume tracked the stock’s arc anyway — one or two articles a quarter through most of 2024 and 2025, a peak of twelve in the listing quarter, down to four so far the quarter after the crash — a coverage epidemic visible in the record’s shape even where the underlying contagion ran mostly through channels the record was never built to measure directly.
