Robert Shiller on Nvidia

The coverage record hit its own high before the stock did — and then it cooled first too.

Shiller’s claim is that a price movement recruits its own justifying story, which then recruits the next buyer — the story can run ahead of, or independent from, whatever the fundamentals are actually doing (Irrational Exuberance). Nvidia’s coverage record gives that claim an unusually clean test, because for once the narrative and the price didn’t move together.

TEXXR’s count of Nvidia-tagged articles peaked at 193 in the first quarter of 2026, 2.3 times the trailing eight-quarter average — and the stock didn’t reach its own all-time high until the following month. In Shiller’s account, coverage volume is part of the mechanism, not a report on it: more Nvidia stories in circulation is more occasions for an “AI changes everything” narrative to reach a new reader, which is his own description of how a bubble’s psychology self-reinforces. That the story-volume record broke before the price record is the sequence his feedback model predicts, not the sequence a purely fundamentals-driven market would produce.

But the same record also shows the correction phase his model requires to complete the loop. Coverage fell for two straight quarters after the peak — 162, then 143 — and by July 2026 Bloomberg reported Nvidia had shed roughly $1 trillion in market value in under two months, landing the stock at its lowest forward multiple since 2019. A narrative that runs ahead of the record and a narrative that gets corrected by the record aren’t opposite findings. They’re the two halves of the mechanism Shiller described: new-era thinking inflates a story past what the numbers support, and then a “contradicting reality” — his phrase, drawn from a century of these episodes — becomes the focal point for the reversal (Irrational Exuberance). Nvidia’s record shows both halves inside a single year.
