When Investors Balked, the Chipmakers Stepped In
In October public investors turned away the small AI builders, and CoreWeave's bonds neared 15%. Banks and the largest borrowers still raised money. The companies that sell the chips are filling the gap.
What closed in October
The clearest case is Firmus, an Australian builder of AI data centres that Nvidia backs. TEXXR’s record traces its price. In April it raised money at a $5.5 billion valuation; in August, at $10.5 billion. In September it sought up to $5 billion in a listing. On 5 October Bloomberg’s sources said demand far exceeded the offer. Three days later the deal was in doubt, and that day Firmus dropped it. Bloomberg’s sources said US fund managers judged a $30 billion valuation too rich for $51 million of revenue.
Others met the same buyers. Nscale, whose S-1 showed Microsoft and Anthropic holding 85% of its contract value, $103 billion, wants to list at about $30 billion, according to sources. Bloomberg’s sources said some investors want $16 billion to $19 billion. The same week Bloomberg reported a six-month delay in Norway and penalties owed to Microsoft and ByteDance. The Telegraph reported that Microsoft dropped a deal to anchor an Essex site that may not get grid power until the 2030s. DayOne, a Singapore builder, is weighing a smaller listing of $2.5 billion to $3 billion, or a delay, against an earlier target of up to $5 billion. Australia’s NextDC cut its earnings forecast by more than a third, and its shares fell.
The bond market moved too. Yields on CoreWeave’s bonds neared 15% in mid-October. The New York Times reported that insuring SoftBank’s debt cost more, and that some Oracle debt traded at 80 to 90 cents on the dollar.
What stayed open
Elon Musk said on 26 October that debt markets had shut off credit for AI data-centre companies and that more than 200 neoclouds face “death and consolidation”. He said it the day SpaceX agreed a $40 billion lease with Apollo to buy Nvidia chips. The record does not support the strong form of his claim. On 13 October DayOne raised about $3.67 billion from seven banks, most of it a term loan. Bloomberg traces chip-backed lending to a Blackstone-led $2.3 billion loan to CoreWeave in 2023, and says it is on track to become a $1 trillion market.
What closed is narrower: public equity for small builders with little revenue, and the riskiest bonds. The large borrowers still raise. Meta plans to raise $95 billion, $35 billion of it in new shares, after reporting $825 billion of commitments, up from nearly $700 billion in July. Meta is choosing to sell stock; nothing in the record says it was shut out of debt.
Who filled the gap
The suppliers. Nvidia promised in July to rent back unused chips from young cloud providers, Firmus among them, for a share of their revenue. In late September the FT’s sources said it was talking to insurers about cover for lenders to neoclouds. On 19 October The Information’s sources said Nvidia was offering easier credit terms and up to $20 billion in leases, and that two industry executives expect seven to ten of hundreds of neoclouds to survive. Two days later its sources said Nvidia was in talks to invest hundreds of millions in Firmus.
Broadcom stands behind up to about $29 billion of one customer’s lease payments, and may lend that customer up to $42 billion in convertible notes that can only pay its rent. Its 10-Q names no customer; Anthropic’s S-1 names Broadcom as its lessor with a $42 billion note facility. Nothing has been paid under the backstop, and no notes have been issued. And Meta’s share sale has Nvidia, AMD and Broadcom as cornerstone investors. The sellers of the chips have offered to carry the buyers’ risk in four forms: guarantees, leases, loans such as Broadcom’s note facility and Nvidia’s $1 billion of Nscale’s convertible notes, and shares.
This is not new in kind. The collateral ladder and the credit wall record AMD backing a Crusoe loan in February. What is new is the scale, and that it arrived in the same weeks the public buyers left.
What it means for the forecast
Our build-out forecast has a “Neocloud fails 2028” world. In it, a large failure makes lenders pull back by 60%, a chill that fades with a two-year half-life. Spreads jump about 200 basis points, neoclouds cannot raise money for three years, hyperscalers stop over-building and lenders sell the seized chips. A guarantee variant mostly undoes the chill; only a “government buys it” variant moves the loss onto the state. The model already widens spreads before any failure, as more of the labs’ rent comes from investors rather than buyers, and it writes off a failed lab’s supplier money against the chipmakers.
October fits the first of those: stress with no failure. What the record adds is a private guarantor. The suppliers are offering what the forecast’s guarantee variant assumes a government would. If a neocloud failed, Nvidia’s offers would carry part of the loss; if the lab behind Broadcom’s backstop failed, Broadcom would.
What to watch
- Nscale’s listing price against the $16 billion to $19 billion some investors want, and whether the $1 billion from Nvidia in its convertible financing arrives in November as planned.
- Firmus’s private round, and on what terms Nvidia invests.
- CoreWeave’s bond yields and its talks to borrow from insurers, which the FT reported on 15 October.
- Delivery penalties. The Information reports tenants now demand $5 million a day in late-delivery fees, up from $1 million in spring. A builder that signs a new contract may owe more if it misses a date.
- The next hyperscaler results, and whether Alphabet, Amazon and Microsoft keep raising capex while the smaller builders struggle to raise money.
