The argument
The tape · quarterly coverage amplitude · live quarter blinking
ASML Holding N.V., headquartered in Veldhoven, Netherlands, trades as ASML on NASDAQ and, on its primary listing, on Euronext Amsterdam. It makes lithography machines — the tool that etches circuit patterns onto silicon — and it is the only company that makes machines using extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light, the method required to print the smallest, densest chips. TEXXR’s coverage record states the claim directly: ASML “holds an effective monopoly on the advanced lithography machines used to produce leading-edge chips.” Every advanced processor from TSMC, Samsung, or Intel passes through an ASML tool before it reaches a customer.
The financial record has kept pace with the attention. ASML raised its 2026 sales forecast for the second time this year in July, to €43B-€45B, after a quarter that beat estimates on both sales and profit. It crossed a $500 billion market cap in January 2026, up 18% year to date and the third European company to reach the milestone. By June, its stock was up 64% for the year but still trailing the broader US chip sector — which has been spending more on packaging and etching than on the lithography step ASML owns outright.
The corpus’s first ASML article is not an earnings note. It runs in April 2019: an allegation that ASML suffered software theft at a US subsidiary by former employees linked to the Chinese government. Then the name goes quiet. It does not appear again for two years.
It resurfaces in July 2021, and this time as an explainer. The New York Times introduces ASML to readers as a $150 million tool that “has become a lever in the U.S.-Chinese struggle,” already subject to export bans. That is the turn — the first time ASML gets described through the trade-war lens rather than as a supplier’s quarterly print.
2022 is when the pace changes. Inside six months the record logs an IP-theft dispute with a China-based firm founded by a former ASML engineer (June), reports that the US is lobbying the Netherlands to ban ASML’s older tools from Chinese buyers (July), and reports that Dutch officials are drafting new export controls of their own (December) — three distinct regulatory or controversy stories, where the prior three years combined had produced one. The Netherlands formally published those controls in June 2023.
By 2025 and 2026 the framing has set. In October 2025, the US House Select Committee on the CCP publicly criticizes ASML, Tokyo Electron, and other equipment makers by name. A Bloomberg profile calls ASML “Europe’s most valuable company” and states the monopoly outright. A Works in Progress deep dive in April 2026 uses “chokepoint” as the headline noun, not a caveat. The escalation peaks in June 2026, when Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick personally questions ASML’s leadership over an EUV machine China allegedly acquired in violation of export rules — an executive-to-company confrontation the 2019-2022 coverage never had.
The spectrogram
Signal decomposition · what the record is made of, by quarter · brightness = share of edges · drift = how far the story moved in meaning
In 2024Q1 the record was 50% financial; by 2026Q1 it is 67% financial. A price chart shows what a name did; the spectrogram shows what its story is made of.
The brains
ASML clears Helmer's five-part Cornered Resource test cleanly — except the one a Chinese lab is now trying to fail it on.
The financials clear Graham's bar cleanly; the variable that moves them most was set by a ministry, not a market.
China's share of ASML's sales fell from half to a fifth in about a year — a squeeze the record reads like a cycle, not a shock.
The machine
TEXXR’s knowledge graph has tracked ASML’s relationships since 2023; in that span it has logged 234 edges. Financial-reporting edges are the largest single category, at 39.3% — expected for a company with a quarterly earnings ritual. The runner-up is not: regulatory edges sit at 18.8%, more than double the next category (product launches, 13.7%). Financial and regulatory combined account for 58% of everything the graph has recorded about ASML — a company whose product is a machine, not a policy.
The the China AI stack relationship is the clearest number inside that regulatory share. China made up 49% of ASML’s combined sales in the first half of 2024 and had been its largest market for four straight quarters. By January 2026, reporting Q4 results, ASML guided China down to roughly 20% of full-year 2026 sales. By April 2026, reporting Q1, South Korea — not China — was ASML’s largest market outright: its share of net system sales jumped from 22% to 45% quarter over quarter. That is a customer-mix swing the graph can date almost to the quarter, with export controls as the thread running through every edge along the way.
The graph also shows where ASML’s chokepoint status is direct and where it is borrowed. Eight cataloged edges connect ASML and TSMC since 2021 — partnership, financial, one acquisition rumor — a relationship the record describes as having “closely collaborated” with the US government on developing EUV itself. Nvidia, by contrast, shows up in exactly one direct ASML edge in the entire graph: an October 2024 note that ASML’s weak outlook dragged Nvidia’s stock down alongside it. The the AI capex supercycle story runs through ASML constantly in coverage volume, but in the graph’s actual link structure it runs through TSMC first — ASML sits one hop removed from the names that get the headlines.
The money
Currency: EUR. Revenue/net income/capex/FCF cross-checked against filed XBRL.
Positioning: how much of ASML is sold short, on the record brokers file twice a month. It lags by design — read it as where the crowd stood, not where it stands.
The record
- Whether China’s reported working EUV prototype (December 2025, built by a team of former ASML engineers) produces confirmed-status edges about a shipped, working tool — not just a lab claim — which would be the first real test of whether the chokepoint has a substitute.
- Whether direct-to-executive regulatory pressure (the Lutnick episode, June 2026) recurs, or reverts to the more usual pattern of rulemaking announced through the Dutch or US government rather than a named official confronting the company.
- Whether China’s share of ASML sales keeps compressing past the roughly 20% guided for 2026, or whether South Korea’s Q1 2026 lead holds as the new baseline.
- Whether the graph starts recording direct ASML-Nvidia edges as the AI-capex chain tightens, or whether TSMC remains the only node between them.
